Kilimanjaro, safari and Zanzibar each have their own best seasons. Here's how to plan around all three.
"When's the best time to visit Tanzania?" is one of the first questions we get, and the honest answer is: it depends what you're doing. Kilimanjaro, safari and Zanzibar each have somewhat different ideal windows, and the good news is Tanzania rewards visitors nearly year-round — you're rarely choosing between "good" and "bad," just between different flavors of good.
This is peak season across the board, and for good reason. Clear skies for Kilimanjaro, wildlife concentrated around shrinking water sources for safari (especially good in Tarangire), and the dramatic Mara River crossings if you're chasing the Great Migration. The trade-off is crowds and higher prices — book well ahead if these months are your target.
A shorter, less crowded dry season, ideal for calving season on the Serengeti's southern plains (dramatic predator action) and a genuinely good Kilimanjaro climbing window too, if colder and with more chance of summit snow. Zanzibar is also excellent during these months — warm, mostly dry, and less busy than the June-October peak.
Tanzania's wettest period, and the one time of year we'd suggest genuine caution — some camps close, roads get difficult, and Kilimanjaro's southern routes turn muddy (though the northern Rongai route stays relatively dry). That said, it's also the quietest and most affordable window, with lush, green landscapes that photographers often love.
Brief, often afternoon-only showers rather than sustained rain. A genuinely underrated shoulder-season window — quieter than peak season, greener scenery, and the migration herds beginning their move south toward calving grounds.
If you're combining Kilimanjaro, safari and Zanzibar in one trip, June-October or December-March both work well across all three components, which is exactly why they're our most-booked windows. If your dates are fixed outside these ranges, don't worry — we'll simply route you toward the routes, parks and beaches that handle that season best (Rongai instead of Machame in the rains, for instance).
There's genuinely no bad time to visit Tanzania — only a best-fit season for what specifically you want to experience. Tell us your travel dates (even if they're fixed by work or school schedules) and we'll build an itinerary that plays to that season's strengths rather than fighting against them.
