Overview

Udzungwa Mountains National Park

Udzungwa is unlike every other park on this list: there are no roads for game drives, because the park protects dense, mountainous rainforest instead of open savanna. What it lacks in Big Five sightings it makes up for in biodiversity — part of the Eastern Arc Mountains, sometimes called the "Galapagos of Africa" for its concentration of species found nowhere else.

  • Home to the Sanje mangabey and Udzungwa red colobus, found nowhere else on Earth
  • The four-hour Sanje Falls trail ends at a 170m waterfall with a swimmable plunge pool
  • Over 400 recorded bird species across the park's forest zones
  • A genuinely different experience from a classic driving safari

Best Time To Visit

When to go

The dry season (June-October) makes for easier, less slippery hiking trails. The park is open year-round, but expect wetter, more humid conditions and slippery paths during the November-May rains.

Do I need to be very fit to hike here?
The Sanje Falls trail is a moderate half-day hike suitable for most reasonably active travelers; shorter trails are also available.
Will I see the Big Five?
No — Udzungwa has no game drives. It's best added to a trip that also includes a classic savanna safari elsewhere.
How does Udzungwa combine with other parks?
It pairs naturally with Mikumi or Ruaha on a Southern Circuit trip, adding a hiking day to a driving safari.
