Kilimanjaro's quietest route

Umbwe is the most direct path up Kilimanjaro and by far the least crowded — a steep, beautiful climb straight up a forested ridge to Barranco Camp, where it joins the same well-established Southern Circuit path used by Machame climbers for the remainder of the ascent. The steep opening days mean this route rewards trekkers with some prior hiking experience.

Day By Day

Your 6-day itinerary

Day 1Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave Camp
A steep, direct climb through dense montane rainforest along a narrow forested ridge. Fewer trekkers use this trailhead than any other route, so expect a quiet, immersive first day among the trees before reaching Umbwe Cave Camp.
Day 2Umbwe Cave Camp to Barranco Camp
The trail climbs out of the forest onto an exposed ridge with the first clear views of Kibo's southern ice fields, before descending to join the Southern Circuit at Barranco Camp beneath the Barranco Wall.
Day 3Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
A short but scenic day starting with the scramble up the Barranco Wall — a hands-on but non-technical climb — followed by a rolling walk across the Karanga Valley to camp.
Day 4Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
A shorter trekking day across increasingly barren alpine desert to Barafu Camp, the final camp before the summit push. Early rest ahead of the night ascent.
Day 5Summit Uhuru Peak; descend to Mweka Camp
A pre-midnight start for the summit push to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) via Stella Point, followed by a long descent to Mweka Camp in the moorland zone.
Day 6Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate; return to Moshi/Arusha
A final descent through forest to Mweka Gate, where you'll receive your summit certificate before transferring back to Moshi or Arusha.

Why is Umbwe considered more difficult?
The first two days climb very steeply and directly, gaining altitude faster than routes like Machame or Lemosho. Once the route joins the Southern Circuit at Barranco Camp, the acclimatization profile matches those routes closely.
Is Umbwe a good choice for a first Kilimanjaro climb?
We generally recommend it for trekkers with some prior hiking or trekking experience, rather than a first-ever multi-day hike, because of the steep early pace.
Why choose Umbwe over Machame?
Solitude, mainly — the first two days see a fraction of Machame's traffic, and the forest approach is considered one of the most beautiful on the mountain.
