Overview

Western Tanzania Safaris

Western Tanzania is the country's true final frontier — no roads connect it to the rest of the safari circuit, and most travelers never make it this far. What they miss is chimpanzee trekking on the shores of Lake Tanganyika at Mahale, and Katavi's staggering dry-season hippo and buffalo congregations, both experienced with almost no other visitors around.

  • Wild chimpanzee trekking at Mahale, on Lake Tanganyika's shore
  • Katavi's dry-season hippo pools among Africa's most dramatic wildlife sights
  • Freshwater beaches on Lake Tanganyika for relaxing between activities
  • Among the least-visited safari regions anywhere on the continent

Why Choose This Region

What makes it different

Chimpanzee Trekking

Track a habituated troop of wild chimpanzees through Mahale's forest, an experience unavailable almost anywhere else.

Dry-Season Spectacle

Katavi's shrinking floodplain pools concentrate wildlife in scenes rarely photographed.

True Exclusivity

No roads, minimal infrastructure and very few visitors — this is Tanzania at its most untouched.

Planning Your Trip

Good to know

Western Tanzania requires light-aircraft transfers and is best visited May-October for the driest trails and clearest wildlife concentrations. Because of the flying involved, most itineraries treat this as a dedicated add-on to a longer Tanzania trip rather than a first safari.

Is this suitable for a first-time safari?
We'd usually recommend the Northern Circuit first; Western Tanzania is best appreciated once you've already experienced a classic safari.
How difficult is chimpanzee trekking?
Treks vary from 30 minutes to several hours depending on where the troop is; guides adjust for your fitness level.
Can I combine Katavi and Mahale?
Yes — they're usually visited together, connected by a short light-aircraft hop.
