What To Pack For Kilimanjaro

From rainforest heat to arctic summit-night cold, Kilimanjaro crosses five climate zones in under a week — here's how to pack for all of them.

Guide

Layering for five climate zones

Kilimanjaro's climate shifts from tropical rainforest at the gate to arctic conditions at the summit, all within a handful of days. The single most important packing principle is layering — no one piece of gear works for the whole climb, but the right combination does.

Clothing

  • Moisture-wicking base layers (top and bottom)
  • Insulating mid-layers: fleece and a warm down jacket
  • Waterproof, windproof outer shell (jacket and trousers)
  • Warm hat, sun hat, gloves (lightweight and insulated pairs)
  • Trekking socks (wool or synthetic, several pairs)

Footwear & Mobility

  • Sturdy, waterproof, broken-in hiking boots
  • Camp shoes or sandals for evenings
  • Trekking poles
  • Gaiters for scree and dust

Sleep & Summit Night

  • Four-season sleeping bag, rated to at least -10°C
  • Sleeping bag liner for extra warmth
  • Headlamp with spare batteries, for the pre-dawn summit push
  • Insulated water bottle or hydration system (to prevent freezing)

Health & Extras

  • Sunscreen and lip balm (UV is intense at altitude)
  • Personal first-aid kit and any personal medication
  • Altitude sickness medication if prescribed by your doctor
  • Snacks/energy food you personally enjoy
