Formerly the northern Selous, Nyerere is Tanzania's largest protected area — a vast wilderness of miombo woodland and the Rufiji River, where boat safaris and walking safaris open up an experience the Northern Circuit can't offer.
Nyerere National Park takes its name from Tanzania's first president, Julius Nyerere, and its scale is genuinely hard to grasp — larger than Switzerland, and larger than any other protected area in the country. The Rufiji River threads through it, opening up boat safaris alongside the walking and vehicle safaris more typical of Northern Circuit parks.

June to October (dry season) is prime time — wildlife concentrates around the Rufiji River and roads are easiest to travel. The park is largely inaccessible during the heaviest rains (March-May), when many camps close.
