When to climb matters almost as much as which route you choose — and the two decisions work together.
"When's the best time to climb Kilimanjaro?" is usually the second question we get, right after "which route." The honest answer: Kilimanjaro can be climbed year-round, but two windows give you meaningfully better odds of clear summit weather.
June to October and late December to early March are Kilimanjaro's dry windows — clearer skies, firmer trails and the best summit visibility. June-October also overlaps with Tanzania's main safari season, which is why most combined Kilimanjaro-and-safari trips fall here.
April-May (long rains) and November (short rains) bring more precipitation, especially on the mountain's southern and western routes. Rongai, approaching from the north, stays noticeably drier during these months and is our usual recommendation if your dates fall here.
Less than people expect. Acclimatization time (route length) affects summit success far more than season. A well-chosen longer route in the "wrong" season usually beats a rushed route in the "right" one.
If your travel dates are fixed by work or school holidays, tell us first — we'll recommend the route that handles that specific window best, rather than forcing a popular route into a difficult month.
There's no bad month to climb Kilimanjaro, only a best-fit route for your month. See our full Best Time to Climb guide for a detailed month-by-month breakdown, or compare all six Kilimanjaro routes directly.
